BENEFITS &
OUTCOMES
SEN
Situation
Despite your best efforts, don’t you find that pupils with special needs continue to:
- - Become easily confused
- - Feel overloaded with information
- - Find it difficult to grasp the point
- - Have weak memories
- - Fail to organise what they do know?
Solution
Using visual tools deals directly with these core learning difficulties. They capture and clarify information. And consequently reduce the confusion of over–verbal classrooms. Their visual and kinesthetic qualities make it easier for pupils to work with and understand new information. These methods help them organise their thoughts for greater learning.
Benefits
When special needs classrooms are systematically and pervasively using visual tools, both by pupils and their teachers across the whole curriculum, you will see pupils much more able to…
- - Follow and grasp the main points of any lesson
- - Question and explain what they don’t understand
- - Get their thoughts out onto paper
- - Organise their ideas for both talking and writing
- - Remember what they’ve learnt
- - Work effectively both on their own and in group situations
- Tackle new, challenging learning with greater confidence
In practice
Our expertise in SEN takes us all over the country.
In 2006-2007 Model Learning led a series of training sessions in Essex for the Local Authority’s SENCOs and Learning Support staff. The work supported SENCOs in their management role and as lead learners.
In Cardiff, Model Learning is currently working with a core group of special school head teachers and their staff providing tools to support leadership, management as well as teaching and learning.
Whilst in our second year with Bedfordshire, we are providing consultancy support to a core group of special school head teachers.
