LearnWise Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do we work with teachers and mentors alongside their students?
A: So that:-
-
you can see the immediate impact and power of these methods rather than just hear about them.
-
you learn how to teach other students the same methods
-
students are far more likely to continue to applying their learning.
Q: Which students should we target?
A: LearnWise is designed for the ‘silent majority’ of students who are motivated but may be underachieving.
These may be D-C borderline students or A* students who are struggling to fulfill their potential. It is not aimed at or suitable for disaffected students. These may also be strong learning advocates; Students need to be sufficiently mature to cope with a full day and, after the course, will share the benefits with others.
Q: How big are the groups you will work with?
A: It depends on the number of staff you want trained or can have available for the day. Typically a mentor or teacher will learn alongside a group of between 4 and 6 students. So a group of 24 students would ideally have 4 members of staff although we know this wont always be possible.
Q: How will the school as a whole benefit?
A: Some of the school benefits include
-
Increased A – C %s
-
Accelerated progression on NC Levels within key stages
-
Motivated staff equipped with proven methods in the areas of cooperative learning, assessment for learning, visual tools and direct interactive teaching
-
Meaningful ways to support the Every Child Matters and PLTS agendas
-
Students who advocate for the use of these methods in class add meaning to the term 'pupil voice'
