MODEL LEARNING FOR PUPILS
Situation
Most probably, you’ve been focusing on learning to learn for some time now. You’ve almost certainly covered approaches ranging from learning styles to self–esteem. And yet, don’t you find that your pupils still struggle to:
- learn independently
- learn collaboratively
- remember their learning
- communicate their learning?
Why? Are you absolutely clear how successful learning happens. Typically, it’s so automatic that the process isn’t captured. And so when pupils fail, they don’t have a method to fall back on. Motivation and self–esteem can only go so far. You need to look at learning further upstream than conventional approaches.
Solution
Working upstream means getting to the source of pupils’ understanding. Focusing upstream helps you see and influence the process of learning as it happens. And that’s far more effective than working with the results of learning, when it’s too late.
Our Learn To Think course adopts this direct approach with your pupils. They discover exactly how successful learning happens with step-by-step methods to organise their thoughts. With this core skill established, learning becomes a process over which they have control. More importantly, when pupils are challenged they have a method on which they can rely. The Model Learning System provides pupils with these essential methods and tools. And makes them visible.
Benefits
When your pupils use visual tools in their learning, you can expect them to:
- transfer their skills across subjects
- work independently
- take control of their learning habits
- replicate successful strategies when stuck
- understand their learning process and take responsibility for it
- make reflection an everyday aspect of their learning
- collaborate productively with peers in group work
- present and explain their work to others
- plan methodically before writing
- write in an organised and clear manner
