DEFINE: CLUSTER

What does it do?

A Cluster is an extended Single Bubble that allows you to make and see various connections between elements that relate to a topic. Its chief purpose is to extend and capture initial brainstorming.

  1. How do you make it?
  2. Write the name of the topic in the centre bubble
  3. Write down any associated idea that occurs to you in a bubble and link it to the centre bubble
  4. Continue this process
  5. Create new links between these outer bubbles if they are in any way connected. Don’t attempt to do this in any ordered, hierarchical way.

When do you use it?

A Cluster is useful for:

  • Catalysing creativity
  • Ensuring divergent thinking is taking place
  • Capturing the flurry of inventive thinking without stopping the flow due to pressure of organising the ideas
  • Supporting learners in sharing and developing their thinking in paired and group situations
  • Capturing ideas of a group prior to organizing
